The infinitive is the present form of the verb with “to” in front of it:
to go
to sing
to study
to work
to swim
The infinitive form of the verb can be used as a noun:
I like to ski.
To err is human; to forgive, divine.
Sometimes the “to” is omitted:
Dig I cannot; to beg I am ashamed.
Error prevention: The most common error relating to the use of the infinitive is trying to use it as the main verb in a sentence.
