Agreement

Nouns, pronouns, and verbs are said to have number. That is, nouns, pronouns, and verbs are either singular or plural.

When a noun is used with a verb to make a sentence, they must “agree” in number:

A giraffe eats leaves. (singular subject with singular verb)
Giraffes eat leaves. (plural subject with plural verb)

It would be a grammatical error to say or write “A giraffe eat leaves” or “Giraffes eats leaves.

Possessive adjectives like his, her, and itsand their plural forms must agree in number (and gender if appropriate) with the words they stand for. For example,

The boy hurt his toe. The boys cooked their own supper.
The girl lost her keys. The girls sewed their own shorts.
The dog licked its paw. The dogs seemed to like their new home.
